Orbetello

The Orbetello area has been home to mankind since the time of the Etruscans. The Romans, the Aldobrandeschi family, the Sienese, and then the Spanish and the Bourbons have all made a contribution to this charming town’s rich history. It stands on a small island surrounded by the Levante and Ponente lagoons, divided by an artificial dam which has linked the town to Monte Argentario since 1841.

The lagoons are enclosed by two strips of land called the tomboli della Feniglia and della Giannella, which offer the visitor miles of enchanting beaches. Today Orbetello is a town with a wide variety of activities, such as shops, cinemas, restaurants, bars and clubs, making it an enjoyable place to visit all year round.

The main monuments and places of interest are: Orbetello Cathedral (Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore), the Church of the Madonna delle Grazie, the Governor’s Palace, Orbetello’s town walls and gateways and the Aldobrandesca fortress in Talamone.
