Porto Ercole
Michelangelo Merisi, better known as Caravaggio, died here in mysterious circumstances in 1610, during his escape from Naples. Porto Ercole is a charming, small, harbour town, full of bars and restaurants. It’s perfect for a stroll whilst shopping in the many small shops created in the fishermen’s warehouses.
The main points of interest include three 16th century Spanish forts which dominate the town. Walking in the old town, you will find yourself in an idyllic atmosphere, one where the only sounds are the sea and the seagulls as it is completely closed to traffic. From here, Feniglia beach can easily be reached.
